COURSE SYNOPSIS

The course is divided into twelve (12) modules as follows:


MODULE 1: INTERIOR DESIGN ESSENTIALS
Introduction, evaluating a design project, makeover, restoration, new project, renovation, the client meeting, recording and evaluating information, environmental considerations, the designer’s role, glossary of design terminology, design elements and principles, point, line, direction, shape, pattern and colour, tonal value, texture, form and volume, scale, harmony and unity, rhythm and emphasis.

 

MODULE 2: COLOUR THEORY

History of colour, mixing colour, table of colour mixes, practical application of colour theory, primary, secondary and tertiary colours, tints, shades and tones, colour palettes, colour, pattern, ancient influences, traditional influences, modern influences, the use of pattern.

 

MODULE 3: COLOUR APPLICATION

Colour psychology, warm palette, cool palette, black and white, cultural considerations, Feng Shui, creating colour schemes, colour conflict, harmonious schemes, paint selection, paint finishes, paint techniques, decorative effects, paint mediums, other mediums, colour selection sheet.

 

MODULE 4: BASIC DRAWING SKILLS

Line and scale, drawing paper, other drawing, materials, equipment, drawing procedures, lettering, text blocks, title block, drawing sheets, margins, floor plans, ceiling plans, elevations, practical exercise, elevation drawing stages.

 

MODULE 5:  STYLE AND FURNITURE

Styles and trends, period and architectural styles, global influences, Australian style, fundamental influences, popular residential styles, furniture selection, requirements of space, furniture styles, furniture spatial planning, practical exercises, furniture sizes and schedule.

 
MODULE 6:  PERSPECTIVE DRAWING
Basic perspective, fundamental terminology, horizon, picture plane, ground line, types of perspective – 1, 2 & 3, types of view, drawing equipment, freehand sketching, entourage elements, interior and exterior, eye line.

 

MODULE 7: SOFT FURNISHINGS

Fabric selection, fibres, weaves, pattern, finish, glossary of fabric selection terms, interior applications, industry standards, window treatments, styles and trends, shades, blinds and shutters, glossary of window types, curtains, drapes, bedroom furnishings, selection process, pillows and cushions, carpet construction, rugs, accessories, the design concept.

 
MODULE 8: PRESENTATION TECHNIQUES
Pencil rendering, solid and graduated wash, hatching, frottage, watercolour washes, practical exercise, felt pen rendering, presentation boards, materials, practical exercise.
 
MODULE 9: MATERIALS AND FITTINGS
Flooring types, timber, tiles, natural stone, concrete, rubber, vinyl, flooring checklist, wall and ceiling surfaces, timber, glass, metal, tiles, natural stone, marble, powdercoating and two-pac, doors, mouldings, trims, lighting types and checklist, lighting and electrical schedule.
 
MODULE 10: BATHROOM DESIGN
The family bathroom, ensuite, guest bathroom, powder room, colour, style and safety, ergonomics, bathroom checklist, surfaces – tiles and laminates, basins, showers, cabinets, toilets, fittings, accessories, light, ventilation, drawing a bathroom.
 
MODULE 11: KITCHEN DESIGN
Planning a kitchen, the work triangle, kitchen layouts, clients’ requirements, kitchen considerations, kitchen checklist, bench tops, splashbacks, sinks, appliances, kitchen schedule, drawing a kitchen, floor plans and elevations.

 

MODULE 12: DESIGN PRACTICE

The design industry, review of design practices, review of residential project, careers in design – apartment, residential, commercial, retail and resort, bathroom and kitchen, lighting, acoustic, environmental and ergonomic, restaurant, restoration, furniture and furnishings, childcare, aged care, recreation, exhibition, event and theme – set and display design, research on design practice, starting your design career, design portfolio, presentation recommendations, folio arrangement, business cards.
