COURSE CONTENT

This course contains ten (10) modules, as follows:

 

MODULE 1: HISTORY OF GARDEN DESIGN AND GARDEN DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Historical influences, famous English, French and American designers, the Victorian era, Shaker gardens, modern, Japanese and Chinese gardens, gardens to visit, introduction to principles of garden design: balance; proportion; contrast; rhythm; harmony, comparison of two designs.

 

MODULE 2: SOILS AND PLANTS

Soils, pH scale, soil improvers, compost, soil preparation, Activity 1, plants, plant identification, scientific and common names, variety, genus, climatic conditions, plant size, choosing plants, pot sizes, plant groups, hedges.

 

MODULE 3: PRE-DESIGN INFORMATION AND DRAWING

Pre-design information, pre-design information questionnaire, talking with the client, aspect, drainage, erosion, erosion definitions, Risk Assessment Table for Water Management, measurements and drawing up the plan, methods of measuring the garden, example sketch, measuring slopes, preparing a scale drawing, structural plan, planting plan, showing plant names on designs, structural planting, further considerations, computer design programs, design presentation, title box, planting terminology.

 

MODULE 4: LANDSCAPING PRODUCTS, WALLS, FENCES AND GATES

Landscaping products, soil types, sand, types, gravels, rock and slate, mulches, sleepers, treated pine products, cement, pavers, other products, boundaries: walls; hedges; fences, advantages and disadvantages, plant and tree screening,  gates, screens and dividers, types of walls, types of fences and railings, gates, trellises.

 

MODULE 5: SURFACING

Surfacing in general, paving, natural surfaces, such as stone, granite, slate and cobbles, timber decking, bricks, brick bonding patterns, tiles, concrete blocks, trims and edges, lawns, building steps, riser-tread ratios, step materials and designs, building a wooden ramp.

 

MODULE 6: GARDEN STRUCTURES AND IRRIGATION

Decorative structures, arbours, pergolas, arches, archways and tunnels, gazebos, summerhouses, awnings, tents and umbrellas, sheds, greenhouses, tree houses, playhouses, play equipment, seating and tables, statues, wall plaques, obelisks, topiaries, urns, sundials, bird accessories, rock gardens, barbeques, glossary of garden buildings, irrigation, pipes, sprays and sprinklers, automatic systems, measuring water pressure.

 

MODULE 7: GARDEN STYLES, LIGHTING AND WATER FEATURES

Cottage, bush and scented gardens, types of garden lighting, identifying lighting requirements, lighting features and effects, planning a lighting system, Glossary of Lighting Terms, water features, selection and considerations, calculating surface areas and volumes, pools, fountains, cascades, waterfalls, pumps and flow rates, safety checklist.

 

MODULE 8: EARTHWORKS, MARKING OUT AND JOB COSTING
Earthworks, contour drawings, using levels, cut and fill, bulking factors, consolidation, compaction, coping with slopes, marking out, marking out from offsets, equipment and tools, job costing, business operating costs, chargeable hours, bulk time rate, hourly charge-out rate, business expenses, estimates, quotes and contracts, client contracts, costing, design, quote, estimating quantities, costing materials, work schedule.

 

MODULE 9: CLIENT-DESIGNER RELATIONSHIPS AND MAJOR DESIGN PROJECT
Client-designer relationship, meetings, discussing & presenting the budget, demonstrating expertise, Glossary of Designers’ Garden Terms, major design project, principles of garden design, considerations.

 

MODULE 10: STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS
Goals, types of business operations: sole trader, partnership or private company, operating capital, record keeping, paying bills, petty cash, cash position, finding clients, client contact, terms and conditions, tax, insurance, financial records, preparing and writing a business plan, business summary, location and services, market analysis, strategy and implementation, management summary, expenses projection, sample letters.


COURSE AIMS AND OUTCOMES

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  

·         Evaluate a design project, have a clear understanding of a designer’s role, and be able to conduct a meeting with a client.

·         Understand the theoretical and practical application of garden design

·         Be more knowledgeable about the historical influences on modern garden design.

·         Be able to identify the various ‘hard’ components of landscaping and design, such as garden structures and walls, fences and gates.

·         Have a good general knowledge about soils and plants, and other landscaping products such as compost, gravel, sleepers, pavers, cement, sand, rock and slate, and so on.

·         Be familiar with the various types of surfacing materials available for use in garden design.

·         Be familiar with the pricing structure of the various landscaping supplies.

·         Have had practical experience in several areas of landscape design, and its allied industries, such as nurseries and landscaping supply yards.

·         Have an awareness of different styles of gardens, as well as lighting and water features.

·         Be knowledgeable about earthworks involved in landscaping and design.

·         Have a broad knowledge on the basics of starting a business, business plans, market analysis and ongoing management.
