COURSE AIMS

At the completion of your course you should be able to carry out the following:

 

  • Describe the nature and scope of wedding planning and the wedding industry.
  • Present a client with options and facilitate key decision-making for a wedding.
  • Explain how to handle different personalities and the roles of different members of the bridal party.
  • Select and manage the use of appropriate locations associated with a wedding
  • Develop a schedule of activities and events associated with a wedding.
  • Manage those events within the time constraints of the established schedule.
  • Effectively control events on the day of a wedding.
  • Improve your ability to communicate with and assist the people who have employed you to manage a wedding, to achieve a desired outcome.
  • Prepare to manage a wedding day, planning for all foreseeable and significant contingencies.
  • Establish and run a viable wedding planning service

 

COURSE SYNOPSIS

The course is divided into ten (10) lessons as follows:

 

 

LESSON 1: INTRODUCTION TO WEDDINGS

This module covers the nature, scope, opportunities and options available when planning a wedding. It looks at different types of weddings, understanding ceremonies (different religions, celebrants, etc), receptions and working with wedding photographers, reception centres, churches, etc.

 

LESSON 2: PLANNING

Choosing locations, services, which products to use from reception centres, rings, the church or venue, catering and flowers, themed weddings, destination weddings and off-beat weddings.

 

LESSON 3: MANAGING PEOPLE

Handling different personalities and the role of different members of the party – mother of the groom, mother of the bride, bridesmaids, maid of honour, best man, groomsmen, conflict, bridezilla, conflict-handling techniques and anger management.

 

LESSON 4: MANAGING LOCATIONS

Assessing locations, site inspections, insurance cover, planning for the worst-case scenario, costs, reverse planning, locations on a budget, photography (pre-wedding and wedding day) and the photo shoot.

 

LESSON 5: MANAGING THE PROGRAM

Travel and transport, at the reception, the receiving line, after the meal, cutting the cake, entertainment, the party, leaving the reception, banishing those evil spirits.

 

LESSON 6: OTHER ISSUES/CONSIDERATIONS

Controlling service providers, wedding cake, stationery, save-the-day announcements, buying the wedding dress, fabrics, floristry, wedding photography, creating romance, photography hints, videos, gift registry, beauticians and hairdressers.

 

LESSON 7: MANAGING THE CLIENT

Methods of communication, initial interview, contracts and cancellations, what to include in the contract, setting a budget, items to consider, checklist, ways of reducing expenses, wedding budget sheet.

 

LESSON 8: MANAGING THE WEDDING DAY

A timetable for the day, wedding planner’s survival kit, useful suggestions, wedding cancellations, wording for announcements.

 

LESSON 9: PLANNING YOUR WEDDING BUSINESS

Market research, key questions, steps involved, types of market research, ways of gathering data, primary and secondary data, the research process, statistics, marketing tips, staying ahead of trends, turning your business into a reality, site maps, advertising and networking, fees.

 

LESSON 10: OPERATING A WEDDING BUSINESS

Checklist of strengths and weaknesses, SWOT analysis, business structures, tax and insurance examples, bookkeeping and accounts, financial records, record-keeping systems, source documents, bank reconciliation, petty cash, balance sheets, working capital, profit and loss.
